Let the bets begin!

What team do you think (or want, whichever) will win this one? It’s a hard one this time to guess, isn’t it? Everyone’s at the same level…

I’m crossing my fingers for the Netherlands… but I’ve got a stronger feeling Portugal is going to go far this time around. But who knows, right?

So what does everybody else think? Come on, let’s hear some views!

Gotta say, I was disappointed that both Ireland and England didn’t even qualify this tournament. What fun is it if we don’t even give England a chance to fail?

I think Spain has a good chance at ending their trophy drought and I’ll be cheering for them but from what I read just now the Dutch looked quite good against Italy…

I too placed my money on Portugal and hope they take it all. It is difficult to tell so far because other clubs are playing well and it wont be easy. Watch out for Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Thats the beauty of the tournament, its wide open. GO Portugal !!!

I agree Dan, it’s not the same without England. But Ireland? Come on…

This is a wide open tournament… but if Greece wins again, it would be nuts. (Though Sweden just beat them, so it’s highly doubtful).

Anybody thinks either Austria or Switzerland has a chance of getting far? It is their home fields, after all…

There are so many things wrong with that comment…

I just hope it was a joke.

Oh, that was actually pretty exciting. They almost made it! When Israel won vs. Russia all England had to do was win against Croatia. They lost 2-3 and so Russia ended up with one point more than England, so Russia and Croatia ended up being the 2 teams to advance to the Euro from group E.

Tragic, isn’t it? At least it was interesting to watch.

How wrong is it that I’m basing my hopes of who wins based on how much noise will be made in my neighbourhood? After Portugal’s win last Sunday, and the 6 hours of horn honking madness that ensued, I’d be happy if they didn’t win anymore games.

Honestly though, since I based all my sports picks on who i don’t like, I’m happy as long as the Italians don’t win. I”m still bitter over the last World Cup.

Watch out tonight, Portugal just won another one…

I agree with you on this though… I had a bad experience when the Greek won 4 years ago. Luckily it doesn’t seem like they’ll win this one. Italy winning was good for me though, my barbers are Italian and when they took the World Cup they gave all their regulars a free haircut! Sweet.

Sorry for the inconvenience but Portugal won again, and they will many more I hope. It’s a shame that you did not partake with the celebrations, its fun. Perhaps a non-football fan would not understand. Go Portugal!

I have to agree with earlier statements: Spain and the Netherlands look very strong. They both have a group of young players ready to make the leap to superstar status (Torres and Villa for Spain, Sneijder and Kuyt for the Netherlands). Being Ducth I have to root for the Oranje, but Portugal’s dominance of the Czechs and Cristiano Ronaldo’s masterful performance in club football this passed season makes me weary. But like I said, go Oranje!

Wow! Things are going great so far!

Portugal seems to be going strong, while Switzerland, the host, is already out. Croatia just surprised Germany with a great game, and in our death group Italy, the world champ, isn’t doing too well.

We’ve had some great exciting twists, and hopefully it’ll just keep getting better and better!

I still have my hopes up for the Netherlands! They’re playing right now, and already got a fast goal against France. Sweet.

Turkey is in, Czech Republic is out?? That was quite the twist, what a game…

It seems like we have more than half the participants of quarter finals lined up already. Anybody wants to change their bets?

It’s fun for a few hours… and there’s a park near Portugal village in Toronto where a lot of people go to celebrate that’s fun too…. even the dancing around the sidewalks.

I just don’t understand the driving your car around in circles for hours on end honking. Nothing to do with football. Maybe you have to live in the middle of it to understand it.

So, calls for todays game? I’m hoping for wins for Romania and France. I’ll be so angry if France doesn’t take out Italy.

Agreed, France all the way! The World Cup was a disaster.

The Netherlands-Romania game should actually be interesting… I’m sure Netherlands won’t send up their best players, so Romania may actually win, and if they do they’re up… so anything can happen.

Hmm… so, Portugal out… didn’t see that one coming.

Here are my predictions- Croatia will beat Turkey and will tie against Germany, but Germany will win in penalty shots.

Netherlands will win, but they’ll make a tough show out of it. Italy will surprise Spain in penalties again, but they won’t manage to win against the Netherlands. Then the oranje will win the finals against Germany and take the Cup.

Well, either that or the exact opposite will happen.

What do you think? Any takers on this one?

Sadly, not mine :( I knew you’d be happy Italy’s out though.

This proved to be the most surprising tournament I’ve seen yet. I’m rooting for a Turkey/Russia final, that would just be amusing. Although the way Russia has been playing Saturday, who knows… those guys are robots, who can run like that for a full 120 minutes? It seemed like they had twice as many players on the field as the Dutch.

Italy and Spain was also a fairly good game… good kicks, but no goals.

Pretty funny how ALL of my predictions were wrong…

I was actually getting really angry with Spain. Great defense, good passing…but it seemed as soon as they got in eyesight of the goal, they were just kicking these long crazy shots! I think if they had been more technical in their attacks the game wouldn’t have gone to penalty shoot out.

Did you catch the game? My roommate and I were going crazy when Casillas came out of the goal early in the second half. I have no idea how he made it back in time to stop Camoranesi’s shot.

Yeah, I did watch that game… that was one crazy save. Spain was never a highly technical team, their style is the least European out of the big European soccer nations. That’s why I don’t like them as much.

I want to say it’s going to be a Spain/Germany final with Spain winning it, but the way things worked out up to now anything can still happen. At least there’s a short break this week, it’s been a game or two a day for such a while it was getting hard to keep track.

Well you’re already half right.. it’s going to be Germany in the finals…. Have to wait until tomorrow to see if you’re right about Spain too!

Not a German fan? Me neither… they play way too mechanically. Sadly, looks like Villa is out of it… so all bets are wide open.
